Do You Have a Bratty Boss? How to Deal

Do you have a boss that behaves badly? Bad behavior may mean calling employees at all hours of the day and night, pitching hissy fits, being stubborn, bullying, bragging and generally making employees uncomfortable and stressed. It's definitely not exactly the kind of manager that generates productivity, creativity, and efficiency. Indeed, just as children with too much power need controls, so do bosses with too much power. Otherwise, they just get worse.

Rather than caving into these kinds of leaders, more employees need a plan of action to deal with such childish behavior that can arise when bosses "act out" under the pressures of their job. If you happen to have such a boss, below are four great ways to keep it under control:
  1. Be brave. Talk to your boss. If you constantly avoid him/her, you won't be doing anyone a favor. By talking to the boss and showing what you have to offer it also will help your own career.
  2. Anticipate. Know the hot-button issues for your boss and steer clear or head them off. Know good times to speak with him.
  3. Laugh. Humor is a great diffuser when your boss's ways are taking a toll on you and your colleagues. When times are tough, you might ask, "Anyone need a doughnut?" as a way to relieve some tension.
  4. Set boundaries. Bratty bosses can make employees' lives miserable because their own insecurities make them clingy and helpless, depending on workers to do tasks for them. So, set boundaries and stand your ground. Employees often fear reprisals for setting boundaries, but managers respect them. Otherwise, you're going to have them calling you at midnight. They appreciate being told not to do that.
Of course, if your boss is completely out of control and makes your work day miserable every day, you need to bring the issues up to your boss's superiors. Although there are strategies you can employ on your own, if your boss is consistently denying you and your co-workers good management, training, and a supportive environment, you need to raise the issue to executive management.
