The Importance of Living in the Now

It's easy to let our minds drift into the past; thinking about what we could have changed, and done differently. And it's equally as easy to spend time focusing on the future and what it may hold. However, spending too much time in either the past or future can cause much worry, anxiety, stress, and even depression. Indeed, one of the keys to living a fruitful and less-stressed life lies in focusing on the now.

Living in the now is a lot easier said than done. However, with a little diligence you can learn how to control your mind to stay focused on the present. Here are two great tips to get you started.

  1. Practice. Set aside one or two minutes a day in which you fully focus on the now. Try your hardest not to allow thoughts from the past or future to enter. Think about everything positive the day has brought you—this can include your health, family, friends, a good meal—basically anything that has brought you joy.
  2. Reflect, don't dwell. The past and future are certainly significant. It's important to learn from past mistakes and recognize possible opportunities. Just be sure you reflect in a way that doesn't bring down your self-esteem and increase your anxiety.
Thinking about the past and future is alright; as long as it doesn't consume you.

Unlike other resources, time cannot be bought or sold, borrowed or stolen, stocked up or saved, reproduced or modified. All you can do is make use of it. Spending time with your children and loved ones while your mind is fully engaged in the present will help you more fully enjoy your life.
"The past is gone, the future is yet to be, and the present is only a split second. Adopting this philosophy leaves no room to worry."
    -Abraham Ibn Ezra
