Weathering the Economic Storm
Practical Advice for Healthcare Professionals
| Healthcare
professionals are fortunate to be in a fairly recession-proof industry.
However, this doesn't mean that we're not worried about the economy.
Over the past several months, Americans have been bombarded with a slew
of bad economic news, leaving many feeling scared and uncertain. The good news is that there are several practical things you can do to weather the hard times. Here are five great tips: Track it.
Write down everything you spend money on. Scrutinize this list every
week. What are you spending money on that you could easily cut out?
Perhaps you're spending a lot on eating out, clothes, shoes, etc. Look
at what you can cut, and then put that cash towards savings or paying
off debt. Clip it. Try to use coupons every
time you grocery shop. Visit online coupon Web sites and see how much
you can save. Many of these Web sites also provide simple and cheap
meal creating ideas. Get creative. You can
still have fun on a tight budget. Create a "swap shop" with
friends--loan movies, books, clothes, etc. This is a great way to enjoy
new things at a great cost--free! Put your home on an energy diet.
If you don't have a digital thermostat, it may be a good time to get
one. Set your heat or air down to a low or high rate when you're at
work. There's no reason to have the house at 75 degrees (in the winter)
when you're working. Investing in energy efficient light bulbs and
appliances can also help with the utility bills. Prepare for the worst. Figure
out how much you need in savings to make ends meet, should you or your
spouse lose your job. Also, know what unemployment benefits are owed to
you if you do get laid off. Although you may have nothing to worry
about, it's always a good idea to be prepared for anything.
Although we have close to no control over the global economy, we do
have a say on what we spend our money on. If your financial outlook is
a little gloomy, the tips above should help you weather the storm. "What is important is to keep learning, to enjoy challenge, and to tolerate ambiguity. In the end there are no certain answers." --Martina Horner |
