A recent study has found that people
who make direct eye contact with people they talk to are perceived as being more
likable than those who don't. Thestudy's lead author, fromDartmouthCollegein New Hampshire, says that this is probably
because eye contact sends the message that the person being spoken to and
listened to is more interesting than anything or anyone else.
The
study also found that eye contact increases your ability to persuade others. If
you are perceived as likable, then people will be more open to paying close
attention to you and more likely to be convinced by your point of
view.
So, if
you're trying to get other people to do something for you, it might be better to
talk to them face to face rather than through e-mail or on the phone. And when
you do raise a topic, be sure to fix your gaze on the person you're talking
to-you'll be more likely to get their cooperation.
